Nocturne

A meditation on dreams and the night — the way sleep can provide answers to questions the conscious mind can't solve. Lee noted that the song was part of a group of five or six songs that emerged from what he considered the best jam sessions he and Lifeson had ever had.

The arrangement is moody and atmospheric, befitting its nocturnal theme. It was one of the later songs written for the album, emerging from the more productive second phase of recording.

"Nocturne" captures the liminal space between waking and sleeping where insights arrive unbidden — a fitting metaphor for the creative process that produced Vapor Trails itself.
