Resist

A deeply personal anthem of individualism inspired partly by Oscar Wilde — a restatement of Peart's lifelong belief in the importance of resisting conformity and maintaining integrity. The lyrics have an acoustic, singer-songwriter quality that sets them apart from the album's heavier tracks.

Lifeson picked "Resist" as one of his favorite Rush songs of all time, ranking it among the best the band had ever recorded. The arrangement has a bardic, almost folk quality that anticipates the more organic sound Rush would eventually develop.

On the Vapor Trails and R30 tours, Rush performed "Resist" as an acoustic duet between Lee and Lifeson — stripping it to its emotional essence. This intimate version became a fan favorite and a powerful moment in later concerts, serving as proof that Rush's songs could work at any volume.
