Malignant Narcissism
The third instrumental emerged from pure spontaneity. During a break from vocal sessions, Lee started riffing on a fretless Jaco Pastorius tribute bass that Fender had sent to Allaire. Unknown to him and Peart, the vocal mics were still active — Raskulinecz heard the jam in the booth and told them to play it again because it was a song.
Named after a line from the film Team America: World Police (creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were Rush fans), the track was assembled from the captured jam and finalized as a drum-and-bass piece with Lifeson adding guitar later.
Despite being just over two minutes long, it earned Rush a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance — their fourth. It became a late-career concert highlight.
