Digital Man
The companion piece to "The Analog Kid," portraying a hyperconnected modern person navigating the information age. The reggae-influenced rhythm — a continuation of the thread running through "The Spirit of Radio" and "Vital Signs" — gives it a distinctive, almost danceable groove unusual for Rush.
At over six minutes, it's one of the longer tracks on an album of mostly shorter songs. The extended runtime allows the band to stretch out musically, with Lifeson and Lee engaging in some playful instrumental dialogue. Lee's bass work is particularly prominent and funky.
The song's themes about living in a digital world and the tension between connection and isolation were remarkably ahead of their time in 1982 — predating the internet age by over a decade.
