Scars
Built on an unusual synth-and-percussion introduction influenced by African music, "Scars" explores how life's wounds leave permanent marks that shape who we become. The scars — physical, emotional, psychological — are mapped as a kind of personal geography.
The track is driven almost entirely by Peart's rhythms and lyrics, with the drums and percussion taking center stage in a way that recalls "Mystic Rhythms." The African musical influence reflects Peart's growing interest in world percussion, which would become more prominent in his later work.
While divisive among fans, "Scars" represents Rush's continued willingness to experiment even as they were consciously returning to a guitar-driven foundation.
