Chain Lightning

An upbeat, energetic track about the spark of inspiration and the way ideas and emotions can cascade through people like chain lightning — sudden, electrifying, and unpredictable. The watery guitar textures and melodic bass create an infectious groove.

The song captures the renewed energy the band felt after their extended break. There's a buoyancy here that was largely absent from Hold Your Fire — a sense of musicians rediscovering the joy of playing together without technological mediation.

"Chain Lightning" demonstrates that even as Rush stripped back the synths, they retained the melodic sophistication they'd developed during the 1980s. The hooks are still there; they're just delivered by guitar rather than keyboard.
