The Enemy Within

Part I of Peart's Fear tetralogy — the final piece composed but the first chronologically, dealing with the most personal and fundamental form of fear: the internal anxiety and self-doubt that lives within everyone. After exploring mob fear ("Witch Hunt") and weaponized fear ("The Weapon"), Peart turned inward.

The music video became a piece of Canadian broadcasting history — it was the very first video played when MuchMusic launched on August 31, 1984, making Rush the inaugural act on Canada's answer to MTV.

Musically it's tight and driving, with a nervous energy that mirrors the internal anxiety described in the lyrics. The interplay between guitar and synth is well-balanced, reflecting the band's efforts to correct the sonic imbalance they'd felt on Signals.
