The Body Electric

A science fiction narrative about a humanoid android escaping captivity, taking its title from Walt Whitman's poem "I Sing the Body Electric" (also the name of a Ray Bradbury short story collection). The android gains consciousness and flees its masters, raising questions about the nature of sentience and freedom.

The driving, urgent arrangement suits the escape narrative perfectly. The blend of synth textures and aggressive guitar creates a cinematic quality, almost like a soundtrack to a sci-fi film chase sequence.

It's one of the more overtly science-fictional songs in Rush's 1980s catalog, harking back to the themes that dominated their 1970s work. The questions about artificial intelligence and consciousness it raises were far ahead of their time.
