Red Sector A

One of Rush's most powerful and harrowing songs, inspired by Geddy Lee's mother's experiences during the Holocaust. Mary Weinrib (Lee's mother) survived Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and her stories of imprisonment and liberation deeply affected her son. While the song doesn't reference the Holocaust explicitly, the imagery of imprisonment, dehumanization, and desperate hope for liberation is unmistakable.

The decision to write about something so personal to Lee — through Peart's pen — gave the song an emotional weight that transcended the band's usual intellectual approach. It's arguably the most devastating lyric in the Rush catalog, made more powerful by its restraint.

"Red Sector A" became a highlight of live shows and remains one of the most emotionally intense songs Rush ever performed. It stands as proof that the band's synth-era sound could carry the heaviest of subject matter.
