A breezy, lighthearted track that captures the excitement and camaraderie of life on the road. This is one of the rare instances where all three members of Rush contributed to the lyrics. The song was born on tour — the band took a wrong turn while driving near St. Louis in a rental car, and Lifeson started writing a tune on his acoustic guitar during the detour. By the time they reached the studio, he had a fully arranged piece ready to record.
The relaxed, almost country-tinged arrangement features nice acoustic and slide guitar work from Lifeson. It stands as one of Rush's most easygoing songs — a snapshot of youthful optimism and the simple joy of experiencing travel and adventure for the first time as young musicians.
Despite its charm, "Making Memories" has never been performed live — making it one of a small number of Rush studio tracks that never made it to the concert stage.
