"Brought Up to Believe" — the protagonist's first encounter with the Watchmaker's doctrine of predestined order. The song explores how we inherit belief systems before we're old enough to question them, a theme Peart had been exploring since "Armor and Sword."

The other pre-release track from 2010, it's heavy and driving, with Lifeson's guitar carrying the weight of institutional authority. The contrast between the musical force and the questioning lyrics creates productive tension.

It sets up the album's central conflict: a young man raised to believe in cosmic order begins to suspect the universe is more chaotic — and more interesting — than he's been told.
