The Twilight Zone

Inspired by Rod Serling's iconic television series, this atmospheric track captures the eerie, unsettling quality of the show. Peart's lyrics reference specific episodes and the general theme of reality being stranger than fiction. The phasing effects and almost psychedelic arrangement suit the subject matter perfectly.

The album itself was dedicated "to the memory of Mr. Rod Serling," who had died in June 1975 — a tribute that appeared on the inner gatefold. Serling's Twilight Zone had been a major influence on Peart's imagination, and this song was his direct homage.

The song demonstrated Rush's ability to evoke specific moods and atmospheres, a skill that would become increasingly important in their later work. Its relatively compact runtime shows the band could channel their storytelling instincts into shorter formats when the material called for it.
