Something for Nothing

The album closer is a powerful, philosophical rocker about the need to work and fight for what you want in life — nothing worthwhile comes free. Peart's themes of individual effort and self-reliance are at their strongest here, closing the album on a note of defiant independence.

Given the context of the album's creation — a band fighting for its survival against a label that wanted to control their artistic direction — the lyrics carry an extra layer of meaning. Lines about fighting for freedom and refusing to accept what's handed to you could easily apply to Rush's own situation in 1975-76.

The song features one of Lifeson's most melodic guitar solos and a driving rhythm section that builds to an anthemic conclusion. It was a regular fixture in the band's live shows during the 1970s and served as a fitting end to the album that changed everything — the record that proved you could succeed on your own terms.
