Lessons
One of the rare Rush songs with lyrics credited to Alex Lifeson, this is a thoughtful meditation on learning from experience and mentorship. The music has a warm, almost gentle quality compared to the heavier tracks on the album, showcasing Lifeson's melodic sensibility.
It represents an important contribution from the guitarist, who would rarely write lyrics again as Peart assumed that role almost exclusively. The song demonstrates that Lifeson had his own introspective voice as a writer, quite different from Peart's more philosophical approach.
While somewhat overlooked in the Rush catalog, it provides a welcome moment of warmth and reflection on an album otherwise dominated by the epic title suite and the more intense B-side tracks.
